A diamond ring is perhaps the most traditional and everlasting symbol of love and marriage. The circular nature of a ring and the sparkling diamond, a rare, precious stone which is eye catchingly beautiful and can take anything up to 3 billion years to form is a symbol of enduring love.

But all diamond rings are not equal; there are an infinite number of metals, designs and styles of ring and then there’s the diamond itself – each of which is unique. Diamonds are graded on four main factors: cut, colour, clarity and carat weight.

The cut of the diamond, refers to how well it was been sculpted by a diamond cutter. The diamond cutter’s job is to cut the stone in such a way that makes the best use of light which requires immense experience and skill. A diamond that is well cut will allow light to be reflected from one facet to another, then dispersed through the top of the stone back to the viewer’s eye, creating a classic diamond glitter and sparkle.

If the cut is too deep or too shallow, too much light escapes through the lower sides of the diamond (known as the pavilion) reducing the aesthetic appeal of the stone. Don’t confuse cut (which refers to the facets on the face of the stone) with shape; diamonds can be fashioned in a variety of shapes such as round (brilliant), pear, oval and heart shape. Diamond wedding rings tend to utilise more subtle design, favouring multiple small, round stones as opposed to a single large stone, which are generally the style of engagement rings.

The colour of a diamond can vary from a faint yellow, through to pink, blue and green. Colours are caused by impurities, so although different colours can look very pleasing to the eye, completely colourless diamonds are considered to be of the highest quality as they allow light to pass through easily, resulting in light being dispersed and split into the colours of the spectrum, creating a rainbow effect.

Most diamonds contain tiny impurities known as “inclusions”. These can interfere with the passage of light through the stone and are therefore undesirable. The gradation of inclusions found in a stone is known as the clarity. This can range from having none at all (producing what’s called a flawless diamond) to inclusions that are visible to the naked eye.

And finally, carat-weight refers to the weight of the stone as measured in carats. A diamond’s value is based on all of these factors; a large carat weight stone, which is perfectly cut and has excellent clarity and colour will cost more that a diamond that has certain imperfections or is smaller.

When choosing a diamond wedding ring, be sure to take your time and ask the advice of your jeweller, who will be able to show you a range of diamonds and rings of different metals and styles of setting. I would like to give you some advice on buying a diamond engagement ring or any diamond ring for that matter. I have compiled this for those with experience and those without so that you can make the best possible purchase and to keep as reference.

A diamond has three basic parts which are the crown, the girdle and the pavilion. Each is faceted differently but in the end, they compliment the whole diamond and produce the best possible sparkle. You want the facets to be of excellent symmetry.

When buying a diamond, you need to know about the four C’s which are cut, color, carat (weight) and clarity.

The cuts which make up the facets are what bring out the best in a diamond or the worst in some cases. The cuts cause the fire or brilliance of a stone to be brought out, which is all done by hand. If a stone has a crown that’s too shallow or too deep or a pavilion that is too shallow or too deep then the light will be reflected everywhere you don’t want it to go and cause the stone to be dim. You want an idea cut.

Stones come in many different cut varieties. There are many shapes other than round that can be cut. There are square, marquise, trilliants, oval, pear etc… The list goes on and these are all considered to be fancy cut stones. These are a little more unusual, for those that want something unique and not the traditional style stone.

The clarity of each diamond is measured by the amount of inclusions it has or has not. The difference between inclusions and blemishes is that an inclusion is an internal flaw and a blemish is external which is on the surface. The grade of clarity that you should pay attention to are flawless (FL), internally flawless (IF), Very very slightly included one and two (VVS1 & VVS2), Very slightly included one & two (VS1 & VS2) and you can stretch to slightly included one, two and three (SI 1,2&3) which are not too bad most of the time.

Depending on where the inclusions are within a stone and depending on the types of inclusions there are, if they are blemishes or inside the stone, it can effect how the light is reflected within the stone and back out. Sometimes inclusions can be beneficial though, if you go to insure your stone, the inclusions can act like a finger print to which you can ID it.

The ideal color for a colorless stone is classed as a “D”, which means there is no tints or hues and it is absolutely white, D, E & F are the most ideal colorless diamonds, G, H, I and J are tinted slightly and anywhere beyond that and you are looking at a yellow diamond and going into brown as you move along the chart to Z.

When dealing with carat (weight), bigger is not always better, you have to take into consideration an important factor. For example, if you are looking at a 1.25ct diamond next to a 1.0ct diamond and they both cost the same price and are the same color but the cut on the larger 1.25ct diamond isn’t the most ideal cut to allow the light to be used to its full potential as I’ve written before and so the smaller 1.00ct is the better option as the light will be utilized better by the stone and create the “fire” look, which the dazzel is so commonly refered to as, when the light is reflected out. You’ll be aiming for very good to excellent cut and remember, size doesn’t always matter.

Another alternative stone type to consider is a lab enhanced stone and in actuality, lab created diamonds are exactly the same as a natural diamonds, with the same elements and structure with the only difference being where the diamond is formed. Lab diamonds are grown under controlled conditions. They can have great quality, cost less and are valued and graded the same way a natural diamond is plus you can get lab reports for them too. The important thing though, if you are buying a diamond, is that you like it. Not because on paper it ticks all the right boxes but because you can see yourself wearing it everyday and not growing tired of looking it.

The perfect diamond is actually colourless.

The less colour (yellow) a diamond permeates the more rare and valuable it actually is.

A letter grade is given to a diamond to describe the subtle tones of colour in the stone.

D is perfectly colourless and therefore the most rare and expensive.

As you progress from D to Z on the alphabet colour scale, the level of colour increases with traces of a yellowish or brownish colour.

Vibrant colours such as pink, red, blue and green are constantly being discovered, but due to their rarity are incredibly expensive.

These colours do not follow the normal colour scale and are categorised separately.

Which Colour Grade Should I Choose? Diamonds graded D through F are naturally the most valuable and desirable because of their rarity. The rarity and value of these diamonds are reflected in their price.

Diamonds graded G through I show virtually no colour visible to the untrained eye.

Diamonds graded J through M show an extremely faint trace of yellow, however this faint hint of colour can be minimised by the careful selection of the right jewellery setting on which to mount your diamond.

D, E, F = For the purest diamond, diamonds graded D-F are superb diamonds and are extremely expensive.

G, H, I, J = For excellent value in a diamond with no noticeable colour to the untrained eye.

K, L, M = Faint yellow diamonds.

N, O, P, Q, R = Very light yellow diamonds.

Diamond Cut

The cut of a diamond is one of the most important diamond characteristic as it provides the diamond with its unique sparkle and brilliance as the cut allows the maximum amount of light to enter and leave the diamond.

Of the Four Cs, the cut is the only value factor that is a result of human skill.

It refers to the angles and proportion of a diamond, as well as its polish and precision of faceting. Often the cut of a diamond is mistakenly referred to as the shape (round, pear, oval, etc.) of the stone.

Well-cut diamonds can reflect light like a mirror from one facet to another and disperse and reflect this light through the top of the stone.

A well-cut diamond will be symmetrically round, proper depth and width and have uniformity of the facets.

These features will result in optimal radiance.

On a classic round brilliant-cut diamond, for example, 57 or 58 facets must be precisely aligned so light will enter the diamond and reflect back through the large top facet, or table of the diamond. Diamonds that are cut either too deep or too shallow can lose light through the sides and bottom and will be less brilliant, and ultimately of less value.

The universal cut grading scale, as defined by the American Gemologist Society Laboratories (AGSL), is outlined below. Currently, only round diamonds are graded.

IDEAL CUT: Represents roughly the top 3% of diamond quality based on cut.

Perfectly proportioned with the highest grade of polish and symmetry.

This grade of diamond reflects virtually all light that enters it.

They are the most brilliant, rare and expensive diamonds.

EXCELLENT CUT: Represents roughly the top 8% of diamond quality based on cut.

Proportioned to fit strict requirements for table and depth percentage.

This grade of diamond reflects almost all light but less than the ideal cut.

They are still quite rare and very expensive.

VERY GOOD CUT: Represents roughly the top 15% of diamond quality based on cut.

Proportioned to reflect much of the light that enters.

This is a high quality and moderately priced diamond.

GOOD CUT: Represents roughly the top 25% of diamond quality based on cut.

Proportioned to reflect most light that enters.

These are considerable value, quality diamonds.

FAIR CUT: Represents roughly the top 35% of diamond quality based on cut.

Disproportioned but allows some light to be reflected.

POOR CUT: This includes all diamonds that do not meet the proportion standards of a fair cut. Disproportioned so that most light entering is lost out of its sides and bottom.

Important characteristics of a diamond cut are described below. Some diamond cutters will compromise on the cut of the diamond in an attempt to optimise the diamond’s weight (carat).

This can result is a larger diamond with a duller appearance.

If all Cs are equal (cut, carat, colour and clarity), there can be as much as a 50% variation in the cost of a diamond if the cut is of poor quality.

TABLE SIZE %: The table length relative to the diameter of the diamond.

A table that is too large or too small will reduce the overall dispersion of a diamonds brilliance.

CROWN ANGLE: Angle between bezel facets and girdle.

Crown % is a measurement that relates to the depth of the crown to the diamonds overall depth.

GIRDLE THICKNESS: Ranges from extremely thin to extremely thick (assessed visually).

Extremely thin or extremely thick girdles are less desirable than more moderate girdles.

DEPTH %: Measurement of the distance from the table to the culet (bottom-most point). A depth that is too shallow or too deep will allow light to escape through the bottom of the stone, reducing the stones overall fire and brilliance. CULET SIZE: Ranges from pointed to extremely large (assessed visually). Unless the culet is abnormally large, it generally has no impact on the value of a diamond.

SYMMETRY: Refers to the overall uniformity of the cut of a diamond and is graded poor to excellent.

Symmetry is based on the diamonds proportions, the relation of one facet to another. A diamond with good symmetry can be more attractive than a less symmetrical stone.

Stones with poor symmetry can actually appear off-centred.

POLISH: The overall quality and uniformity of the polish of a diamond. It is graded poor to excellent based on the final finish applied to the facets and facet junctures by the cutter. Well-polished diamonds permit maximum passage of light and prevent potentially streaky surfaces.

Don’t let them talk you into buying something that will not be to your liking afterwards. So, consider a few things first before buying so you can make the best buy, like finding an accommodating jeweler who listens to you and understands what you want. Before the First Step

You buy a diamond ring to express love, appreciation or adoration for someone, or you buy it to please yourself but certainly not because you think it is an investment. Therefore, you want to get the best your money can afford.

The First Step

First of all, decide on how much exactly you want to spend. This will determine your choices of a diamond ring. Once you know your limit, you can search the market for the diamond that can match your budget. Actually, the biggest slice of your budget will pay for the stone, therefore, it is important to know what you like as to its setting. Then you’ll know exactly how much you have left to pay for the diamond. An idea of the cost will show the jeweler that you know what you are looking for.

The Second Step

A basic knowledge of how diamonds are valued will make it easy for you to select your diamond. There are four C’s to remember about diamond quality that determines price. These are cut, color, clarity and carat. Determine which of the four C’s is most important for you and look at them in descending order from first priority to last priority. For a better understanding of these factors, here are some important points to remember. The cut determines the shape of the diamond and how well it is cut. The cut is responsible for its fire of rainbow colors that flash inside the stone as well as its brilliance. You may choose from either the classic round, the “new” classic, the square shape, known also as the “princess” cut, or you might want to go with an elegant European classic like the emerald shape or the asscher cut.

The color is very influential in the valuation of the diamond. As the amount of visible color decreases, the price of the diamond increases, meaning, the less color in a diamond, the more valuable it becomes. Its color ranges from colorless which is the most expensive to light yellow which is the least expensive. The setting has to be properly selected. Do you prefer a white metal such as platinum or white gold or will you be going for a yellow gold ring? In a yellow gold ring the diamond that is colorless will reflect the yellow of the ring to some extent which will make the diamond look darker than it really is. It really doesn’t make sense to spend extra for a colorless diamond when it will be set in a yellow gold ring. If you really prefer the yellow gold ring, the diamond with an H, I, or even a J color which are near colorless will look great in the ring. If you are going for a white metal, you have to go with the colorless and the near colorless like the H or higher.

As in color, higher clarities in a diamond cannot be seen by the naked eye. But, you can try anyway. At arms length by extending your arm down the side of your body and bending back your hand as in admiring a ring on your finger, if you can tell its clarity, then it is in the clarity scale of slightly included 3 (SI3) to included 1 (I1) where there are inclusions of tiny crystals, feathers or clouds. These inclusions affect the brilliance of the diamond. If at elbow range (approx. 12 inches away) you see no flaws, you can go with an SI2 to SI3 clarity range. At nose length and you don’t see anything then you’ll need to go with SI1 clarity or a very good SI2. If you don’t see anything under magnification such as a jeweler’s loupe then you’ll have to go with VS2 clarity or a very good SI1 clarity. Actually, there are 11 clarity scales of a diamond, these are from the highest to the lowest – flawless (F), internally flawless (IF), very very slightly included (VVS) 1 and 2, very slightly included (VS) 1 and 2, slightly included (SI)1 and 2, and included (I) 1, 2 and 3. The problem is that the human eye can barely, if at all, see the difference, but clarity likewise dictates the price of the diamond.

The Last Step

Once you have decided about the shape, color and clarity of your diamond, and you have decided on your budget, there is still one factor to consider – the weight or carat of the diamond. Remember though that the cut of a diamond may make it appear larger or smaller than its actual weight. Suppose you want a round diamond that has an H color and SI1 clarity and let’s also assume that you wanted to spend $5,000 on the diamond only. Ask your jeweler the following question: “I am interested in buying an H/SI1 round diamond. What is the largest diamond I can get for up to $5,000?” But, remember that if you are looking for a diamond that is of high clarity get only diamonds certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). All diamond experts and jewelers know that the GIA’s grading is recognized throughout the jewelry industry as the most accurate and unbiased opinion when it comes to grading diamonds, especially if the diamonds are over 1 carat in size.

Alternative option in order to get what you want

If after getting quotes from several sources and you still don’t like the sizes presented to you, you have the option of choosing a clarity enhanced diamond. With clarity enhanced diamonds, you will typically be able to get a 30% to 40% larger diamond for the same price as a non-enhanced diamond. Or, if you like the size you were presented in a non-enhanced size you will be able to get the same size for 30% to 40% less cost in an enhanced diamond.

A word about Ring Sizing

If you want to surprise someone with a gift of a diamond ring and you don’t know her or his ring size, you just cannot ask that person about it, so, to be sure that the ring fits, here are some ideas to know a person’s ring size without asking her or him:

– Ask her/his mom or sisters if you think they can keep a secret.
– Pay attention to the ring(s) she/he usually wears and when she/he takes it off trace it on a piece of paper. Make sure you trace the inside of the ring not the outside.
– If she/he doesn’t wear rings, simply take a piece of string and wrap it around her/his ring finger when she’s/he’s asleep. Mark the length of the string without squeezing it too tight. Measure the length on a typical ruler in either inches or centimeters. Give your jeweler this measurement and they’ll convert it to the proper ring size.
– Always keep in mind that the ring has to make it past the knuckle first.

In case the ring doesn’t fit exactly right it can always be resized. Most jewelers charge between $25 and $75 depending on how many sizes up or down is necessary.
