Fine pure red diamonds are by far the rarest in nature. The largest recorded is the Moussaieff Diamond which weighs 5.11 cts. and was cut from an 11 ct. rough stone from Brazil by William Goldberg Diamond Corp. in the form of a Trilliant. The finest colour red diamond is simply known as The Red Diamond. It is a 5.04 ct. emerald cut stone of the most magnificent blood red colour. It is lucky to be in existence as it was found inside a 33 ct.piece of black bort rough which was bought for $160 for crushing into polishing powder but the owner, Mr. Houtakker sent it to Amsterdam for cutting out of curiosity after a comment made by Sir Ernest Oppenheimer aroused his interest – a very lucky move!!
Purple diamonds are very rare and the colour is never good, at best it is purplish red, grey or pink. These comments only apply to NATURAL, UNTREATED diamonds and not lab created stones which are being turned out in an amazing range of colours.
According to my studies, I believe red diamonds are still the rarest. More so then green, and all the other colors.
