Among the most well known diamonds is the
Hope.   This 45.52 carat steel blue diamond
is currently on display at the Smithsonian.  
The legends of the ill-fortune and curse
bestowed on the possessor of the Hope
Diamond are many.  This diamond was
donated to the Smithsonian in 1958. The
Hope was originally a rather flat, blocky
110-carat rough.

The Dresden Green stands out among the
natural colored diamonds. It is the largest
green diamond in the world weighing
40.70 carats. This diamond is historic, large
and has a natural green color with a slight
blue overtone.  These facts make it virtually
priceless.

The Conde Pink is a pear shaped and
weighs 9.01-carats.  This pink diamond was
once owned by Louis XIII.

The Tiffany Yellow diamond a beautiful
canary-yellow octahedron weighing 287.42
in the rough (metric) carats discovered in
either 1877 or 1878 in South Africa.  The
gem after cutting boasts the extraordinary
weight of 128.54 carats. And until recently,
was the largest golden-yellow in the world.

The Koh-I-Noor  ( Mountain of Light )  is now
among the British Crown Jewels.  This
diamond weighs 105.60 carats.  First
mentioned in 1304, it is believed to have
been once set in Shah Jehan‘s famous
peacock throne as one of the peacocks eyes.

The Agra is graded as a naturally colored
Fancy Light Pink and weighs 32.34 carats.
It was sold for about 6.9 million in 1990.  
Since this sale, it has been modified to a
cushion shape weighing about 28.15 carats.

The Transvaal Blue is pear cut.  This blue
diamond weighs 25 carats. It was found in
the Premier Diamond Mine in Transvaal,
South Africa.  

The Great Chrysanthemum was discovered
in the summer of 1963, in a South African
diamond field.  This 198.28-carat fancy
brown diamond appeared to be a light
honey color in its rough state.  However,
after cutting, it proved to be a rich golden
brown, with overtones of sienna and burnt
orange.

The Taylor-Burton Diamond is a pear-shaped
69.42 carat diamond.  Cartier of New York
purchased this diamond at an auction in
1969 and christened it “Cartier.” The next
day Richard Burton bought the diamond
for Elizabeth Taylor. He renamed it the
“Taylor-Burton”.   In 1978, Elizabeth
Taylor put the diamond up for sale.  
Prospective buyers had to pay $2,500
each to view the diamond to cover the costs
of showing it.  Finally, in June of 1979, the
diamond was sold for nearly $3 million dollars.

Diamonds have always been the most sought after gemstone in the world. Even in history, it possesses a great significance. •    Cut ( various cuts and facets with proportions)
•    Carat Weight ( which affects the size)

Other important factors like beauty, durability and cost all depend on the above factors. There are several cutting styles like brilliant, step, or mixed cut. Brilliant modern cut has most number of facets on a stone. Facets in a round cut are kite or triangular in shape.

Step cut has cuts in rectangular or trapezoid. However, regardless of cut, it’s the brilliance that matters. Brilliance is the most important factor for making color more captivating, adding a gleaming spark to it.

Champagne diamonds are actually tinted diamonds that occur by natural means in just a small number of locations around the world. Found primarily in the Argyle mine in Australia, they are usually light brownish diamonds, or yellow diamonds with a small amount of brown. Like all fancies, their color comes from a variety of included impurities. Even so, in contrast to some other fancies, champagne diamonds are Type II fancies.

Type I fancy colored diamonds are diamonds whose coloration is actually based on from external non-diamond sources, like incorporated impurities, such as nitrogen and boron, or perhaps natural radiation. Nitrogen is actually the most often seen impurity and makes Yellow-colored and Orange diamonds. Boron produces fancy Blues. Natural radiation on the other hand, typically yields green diamonds.

Type II fancies are usually produced whenever something happens to deform the crystalline structure of the diamond at the time of its development. For example, intense pressures could contribute to deformation of the crystal lattice, dispersing light and creating Reds, Pinks, Browns and Champagne diamonds.

Champagne diamonds range in tint from a pale straw brown to a lush deep cognac brown. They are especially revered for their stunning brownish shade, which could very well also have flashes of gold, red, copper and peach. Champagnes are exceedingly attractive gemstones!
The Earth Star and the Golden Jubilee are only two of the most famous Champagne diamonds. A lot more than fifty percent of the 248.9 carats of the diamond rough of the Earth Star was cleaved when it was cut into a impressive 111.59 carat cognac hued Pear shape. It is certainly still one of the most significant diamonds of its category across the globe. But the biggest faceted diamond is still considered to be the Golden Jubilee diamond which boasts a yellow brown Champagne coloring and is widely thought to be the most attractive diamond of all time.

Some of the terms one must be acquainted with before going out to buy a diamond are:

• The cut
• The Color
• The clarity
• The carat

The above list is termed as the four C’s, which when combined, provide the essential guidelines that would help you evaluate the value, worth and quality of a diamond.

The Cut of a Diamond:

The secret behind a good quality diamond’s blinding sparkle lies in its cut. The perfect cut is what gives a diamond its eye catching and attention grabbing appeal. The flat polished surface of the stone is cut and shaped in such a way so as to absorb, redirect, reflect and release the maximum amount of light. The cut solely decides the amount of sparkle. So ultimately, the craftsman who shapes and cuts the stone holds the remote control to the amount of sparkle in a diamond. The craftsman has no control in influencing the quality of a diamond through the other three C’s however.
The Color of Diamond:

Color is a natural quality of a diamond and cannot be worked on to enhance the beauty of the stone. The lower the amount of color contained by a diamond, the higher is its worth. The colors to look out for are:

• The most unique and hence most valuable, are the diamonds that have a dominant neutral color. Almost colorless stones are ranked highest in the grading of the quality of a diamond

• The faint yellow diamonds

• The very light yellow diamonds

A point to note is that when diamonds are encrusted by platinum, white gold or sterling silver, they must be of the yellow color, as this makes them stand out more.

There exists, in the diamond world, a specific diamond ranking or grading system. This grading system makes use of letters which symbolize the rank of diamonds, based on quality and worth. For example, the letter D would stand for a rare and highly valuable diamond. The letters E and F too, are high up on the rank list. The ranking system, go all the way up till X, with colorless diamonds having higher ranks. Flaws in diamonds of the ranks F to S are however, not evident to the bare eye.

So when you do decide to go get your special someone a diamond, don’t forget to familiarize yourself with the four C’s and the diamond ranking system. Take the trouble, because it’s not every day that you go out and buy a diamond!

Natural fancy colored diamonds are extremely rare. There are currently less than ten natural red diamonds on the market for sale. A lot of diamond colors come from the earth from which they are mined, but others jewelers color to make them look good.

The most common form of creating fancy colored diamonds is irradiation treatment similar to that which also occurs in nature. Sometimes violet and other fancy colored diamonds have been subjected to certain dyes to create their colorful appearance. Many people like stones to have no color and consider them to be more of value but others enjoy the bright colors in their stones. Most colored diamonds are mined that way naturally.

Since colorful stones come in all kinds of colors it’s often hard to tell what the color is. Most of the time you will have two colors in the stone that are a greenish blue. Every stone has a color description and might even have a second description as well. One of the most famous canary yellow engagement rings was worn by Paris Hilton. The emerald cut ring weighed in at a hefty 24 carats. Yellow diamonds are more expensive than their white counterparts, and the intensity of the color factors into this.

Unlike other gem stones, a diamond’s quality is judged mostly by the absence of color in them. The worth of diamond jewelry is judged solely by the purity of its brilliance.

Like any other natural stone, however, diamonds come in several shades of colors that are beautiful in themselves.

So far, there is a good range of colors in diamonds, aside from the in-demand blue and pink. Commercially available now are yellow, orange, green, champagne, grey, black, white, red, purple, chameleon and violet diamonds.

Absence of color and perfection

Among jewelers, the finest diamond stones are those that are totally colorless. They are graded D, meaning they are absolutely free of any color.

Theoretically, a chemically pure and structurally perfect diamond is also perfectly transparent with no color whatsoever. However, a good number of all the diamonds used as gems are imperfect.

A tinge of color

The next group are stones with very slight traces of color which can be seen by a diamond expert. When assembled into a finished jewelry, the color shades of these stones usually cannot be discerned anymore. Still, they are graded as E or F color diamonds.

Down the line, those stones which show very little traces of color are categorized as G or H color diamonds, or perhaps I or J color, depending on the strength of the color seen.

Grading and color

Those stones that are graded between D and F are considered “colorless”. Those that belong in the G to J group are called “near-colorless”. Those within the K to M grading are “slightly colored” and the N to Y stones usually looked like light yellow or brown.

One peculiar twist to the rule – those diamond stones graded Z are also rare and those bright yellow diamonds are priced higher than the ordinary.

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) had developed the present color rating system for white diamonds (“D” down to “Z”, according to the intensity of the coloration). This has been universally recognized and adapted, overriding the previous older systems.

Fancy

The industry considers diamonds with intense colorations as “fancy”. An intense yellow coloration is regarded as one of the fancy colors and belongs to a different color grading system.

Gemologists have another rating system for fancy colored diamonds that is different from that used in white diamonds. However, this is not commonly used because these stones are relatively rare.

The color seen in the stones either detract or enhance its value, depending on the color itself and the intensity of the coloration. Examples would include the grade Z bright yellow, or an intense pink or blue in the stones, each one of which commands a better price.

Impurities

There are reasons for these colors in the stones. They could be structural defects in the crystal lattice of the stone or it could be a result of some chemical impurities.

Nitrogen is the most common impurity. It sometimes replaces a small proportion of carbon atoms in the diamond causing a yellowish or brownish tone.

Many impurities and structural flaws produce different colorations in the diamonds. Impurities are almost always present in white diamonds. It is not detectable in the rarest stones.

On the other hand, pink tourmalines are another alternative to pink diamonds. You can combine small pink diamonds with more affordable gemstones to have more choices. Also, colorless diamonds can undergo treatment to develop a pink hue at a more affordable price.

Regular couples today are also selecting canary yellow stones for their engagement rings. Diamonds with a natural intense yellow color are considered more desirable than those with a slight yellowish hue. The yellow color is considered as the presence of nitrogen atoms when the diamond is formed. To give the diamonds a yellow hue, they have to undergo a process called irridiation or high pressure/high temperature treatments.

Compared with the white counterparts, yellow diamonds are much more pricey. For those couples who cannot afford a natural yellow diamond or pink diamonds, they can opt for smaller yellow diamonds or natural yellow gemstones such as yellow sapphires or citrine.

The public is beginning to realize and want to understand the finer qualities of precious stones. Year after year the public is demanding greater excellence in quality and cutting.

The number one quality of a diamond as a jewel is its brilliancy. For example put fifty rings of equal size in a tray, the most brilliant will always gain the most attention. The stones brilliancy attracts the eye of the buyer. Sometimes a stone will lack brilliancy due to impurity of color, imperfections, or poor cutting. Stones that lack brilliancy even if extremely valuable, will not demand much attention. On the other hand a stone that has fire and life will fascinate and demand attention.

After brilliancy comes color. The color which usually demands the highest price is a bluish white. The quality of color was long ago termed Old Mine. Right after bluish white tints, the next is the purest white. Pure white colors were coined River goods. These goods are notable for their purity of color. For some unknown reason, stones of wet diggings are superior in quality, to those of dry diggings. After these come crystals which are divided into crystals and top crystals. Besides brilliancy and color, cutting and perfection weigh heavily pay large dividends when the value of a jewel is in question. Cutting is an essential step in jewelry game because so much depends on it. When a worker cuts a stone their main concerns are weight, color, and brilliancy. The diamond cutters of yesterday cut mostly to preserve weight and color. Recutting a stone is often times an arduous chore, one must be careful as to not cut out considerable weight or color.

For each stone there are certain angles and arrangement of facets suited to its refraction, which embody the light falling upon it, and best assist the light falling upon it, and best assist the natural power of the stone also to reflect and disperse rays of light. For stones to be cut to perfect proportions an expert cutter needs to be employed. It costs more cut a stone to exact proportions than to cut the proportions to the stone. Perfect proportions are a must for optimal brilliancy. A diamond face up, should show an even distribution of light.

Flaws that do not hurt the brilliancy of the stone are immaterial, but they do however hurt the price. Upon inspection even an inexpert can discover them. Carbon spots, cracks in the grain, imperfect crystallizations, and holes and the surface are all serious objections and reduce the value considerably. Slight grain marks, needle-point bubbles, or specks, do not weigh in as much as brilliancy and color.
