Today, they are mass produced with production reaching as much as 100 tons every year.

• Rock crystals or rhinestones are crystallized quartz which can look like a diamond, however, they could get easily scratched.  

• Zircon is another kind of stone which could pose as a diamond.  By exposing the stone to heat, it could turn colorless making it look like quartz and diamond.  Just like rhinestones they could get easily scratched.  
• Cubic zirconia is called the grandfather of artificial diamonds.  As a diamond copy, it is synonymous with low-cot jewelry and not as a decent fashion accessory.

These characteristics make it easier for some expert to differentiate a moissanite from a real diamond.

Color

Completely colorless diamonds are the most valuable, and the rarest kind. Most “clear” stones contain small amounts of color. A one-letter designation classifies diamonds according to the amount of color, if any, they contain. The highest rating for colorlessness is D, with E and F close behind. These colorless stones are very rare. The scale continues past near-colorless (G-J), faint yellow (K-M), very light yellow (N-R), and to light yellow (V-X). Diamonds graded from G to I have virtually no color visible to the untrained eye. Color choice may be more important when placing the stone in a sterling silver, white gold, or platinum setting, where a diamond’s yellow tint would be more noticeable.

Cut

Cut does not refer to the overall shape of the stone (as seen in round or pear-shaped gems). Rather, cut refers to the reflective quality of the diamond. Clarity

Diamonds are natural materials, and it is common for them to contain small imperfections. Inclusions are imperfections inside the gemstone, while blemishes affect the outside. Jewelers use a 10x loupe (a magnifying device) to inspect and grade stones. The grading is as follows:

- F: Flawless. Almost Impossible to find, make sure that if someone tries to sell you one that they are legitimate and not trying to con you with a synthetic diamond.

- IF: Internally Flawless. There may be some surface flaws, but the diamond is perfect inside. This is very rare.

- VVS1 – VVS2: This is actually two grades of Very Very Slightly Included. These stones have tiny inclusions not easily detected by trained professionals.

- VS1 – VS2: Two more grades, Very Slightly Included. Small imperfections are hard to spot.

- SI1 – SI2: Two grades of Slightly Included, with small imperfections a little easier to see with magnification.

While the value of a diamond increases with its clarity, it’s important to know that the imperfections contained in grades F through SI are not visible to the naked eye. There are also three grades of Included (I1 – I3), which contain imperfections that can be visible.

Carat Weight

Diamonds are measured in carats, with one carat equal to 0.2 grams. The largest cut diamond in history is Cullinan1, Star of Africa, weighing in at a whopping 520 carats. When it comes to choosing the cheapest diamonds, you must learn the 4C’s rule. The 4C’s are carat, clarity, colour and cut. Carat is a measurement of the diamond’s weight. The more carats mean the diamond is heavier and naturally more expensive. The number of inclusions available determines clarity. The fewer inclusions the more value it would be. Colour plays an important role as well in the pricing because if the colour were rare then the diamond would be very valuable. As for the cut, different cuts have different values.

Diamonds are useful and beautiful stones that undergo a complicated process before being used in a variety of applications, most commonly known would that of the jewelry-making business.

While there are now laboratories that create synthetic diamonds in a span of a few days, it is the formation and production of natural diamonds that require very specific conditions.

Diamonds formed through natural circumstances are exposed to extremes in high pressure of about 45 to 60 kilobars and to comparatively low temperatures of about 900 to 1900 °C. These rough stones are mined or recovered through either pipe or alluvial mining.

Pipe mining refers to the extraction process found in volcanic pipes. In most locations, a pipe mine is composed of kimberlite, which is dug from the surface of pipes in rough opencast mining.

Once these are exhausted, the diamond miners start digging tunnels into the deeper parts of the pipes. The rocks recovered, which contain rough diamonds, are then moved to a screening plant where the rock bits are separated from the diamond bits.

It typically takes an average of 250 tons of pipes to produce a one-carat gem quality polished gem.

Allluvial mining, on the other hand, is located on riverbeds or ocean beaches. When diamonds were formed in pipes deep inside the earth millions of years ago, some of these separated and was carried out along the rivers and oceans.

In order to mine these diamonds, a wall is built to hold back the surf or water. Up to 25 meters of sand and rock can be bulldozed to reach the diamond-bearing level.

Once these are recovered or mined, the diamond-bearing earth is transported to the screening plants.

Of all the diamonds mined in the world each year, less than half are gem quality, which are used in jewelry making and display a high standard of excellence, usually with a clarity grading of flawless to near invisible inclusions.

The rest that are recovered are either near-gem quality or industrial quality diamonds. Near-gem quality diamonds can either be used to jewelry or industrial applications, depending on the actual stone.

As for industrial quality diamonds, these are usually of low quality or have a lot of blemishes and inclusions, and are usually used as drill bits and for cutting purposes.

All the diamonds recovered from mining will undergo a cutting and polishing process to obtain their final form, as we know it.

Although technology has played an important role in perfecting these techniques, cutting and polishing diamonds has its origins in India, where it was discovered by Indian lapidaries that a diamond can be made to sparkle and be smooth simply by grinding it against another diamond.

Nowadays, even with the use of machinery, diamond cutting and polishing can take anywhere from several hours to several months to complete. Some diamonds, especially gem-quality stones, are studied for months, even years, before the cutting and polishing process begins.

Each stone is different, and must be carefully studied and marked for cutting. That is why only experts commit to this process, as a diamond’s ultimate price and value may plummet due to a poor cut.

A diamond can usually stand to lose half of its original weight after this final process.
