Certified Diamonds Articles

People who are seeking diamonds for sale, whether as an investment, for use in crafted jewelry or both, will find no shortage of online sources; entering the term in any search engine will return nearly a quarter million results. But where is the best place to find diamonds for sale?

Diamonds are Different

Unlike gold, silver and other commodities, you won’t find loose diamonds traded on a commodity exchange. The reasons: diamonds for sale generally have a substantial mark-up; the resale market for diamonds is quite limited; and control of that market is remarkably concentrated. Recently, well over 90% of all the world’s gem-quality diamonds were cut and processed in Surat, India; London, Tel-Aviv and New York are active markets for loose diamonds. The other major diamond jewelry center is Antwerp, Belgium, where the diamond-cutting industry got its start some 500 years ago.

How Valuable Is It?

Loose diamonds are subject to both inspection and appraisal. The former is also called certification; any diamonds for sale that you find should be accompanied by documentation of that fact.

Certified diamonds for sale have been measured, examined and analyzed for weight, clarity, color and cut by trained specialists called gemologists. These professionals prepare a grading report based on criteria established by the Gemology Institute of America (GIA). Diamonds of greater weight without visible marring or scratches that have been professionally and carefully cut are naturally worth substantially more than rough stones; additionally, colored diamonds with rich hues may command more of a premium than the more common white or “clear” ones.

How Reliable Is The Report?

It should be apparent that a grading report that has been prepared by an independent, unaffiliated, outside agency has much greater reliability than a similar report prepared by the diamond merchant’s “in-house” gemology lab. The most reputable dealers that have diamonds for sale generally agree on this point, and will provide documentation of this with the loose diamonds prior to purchase.

It is important to understand however that such an analysis and grading process can be carried out only on loose diamonds; because of the procedures used, such an evaluation is impossible to do once diamonds have been mounted in a setting.

How Much Do Loose Diamonds Cost?

Although the price of certified diamonds has historically risen, many factors – including the content of the grading report, current market conditions, and even location can cause fluctuations in the priced of diamonds. If you are planning to enter the market and are considering the purchase diamonds for sale, it is highly advisable to educate yourself about these remarkable gems and the market in which they are traded.

Researching Your Diamond Purchase

The first thing that you want to do is to narrow down what type of diamond that you are looking for. Loose diamonds or diamonds in jewelry settings? Shape of diamond? Size of diamond? Answering these questions will enable you to narrow down your search when you visit websites. Don’t purchase from the first website that you find. Visit several websites and compare prices and the diamonds that they offer. Include shipping costs, handling costs, insurance costs, and any other costs that are associated with your purchase. This can give you a total price that you can compare from website to website. To save time and money use the loose diamonds price comparison at BlueMiner.com. Make sure that you purchase certified diamonds from websites that are established and reputable. Check their credentials and their relation with jeweler associations, as well as their record with the Better Business Bureau in their area. Another thing that you want to research is the return policy. Make sure that you completely understand the return policy, so that you can return the diamond if you are not happy with what you got.

Making Your Purchase

Now that you have done your research, you are ready to make your purchase. One of the most important things that you can do to protect yourself is to use your credit card. In this way, if you have issues with your purchase, you can contact the credit card company for help to get your money back from the company. This is most commonly used when an item is misrepresented by the website that sold you the diamond. Getting an independent appraisal of your purchase when you receive it is essential to making sure that you are getting exactly what you paid for.

In future articles i will provide useful information on how to make sure you are getting a good deal on your diamond.

Advice on Loose Diamonds

Posted by admin in Certified Diamonds at May 03, 2010

Whether you are thinking of buying loose diamonds for mounting in a piece of diamond jewelry or as an investment, you’ll want to educate yourself ahead of time and learn all you can about certified diamonds. Not every gem mounted in a piece of diamond jewelry is valuable, so its important to know what to look for.

Before You Begin

Two things that are necessary to know before you start looking at diamonds for sale are:

1.) the current state of the diamond market

2.) the names of some trustworthy independent appraisers

The second point is very important. If you’re buying diamonds for your diamond jewelry – or even looking a diamond engagement rings or other mounted pieces – if the seller refers you to his own in-house appraisal service or one operated by an “acquaintance,” at best it’s a clear conflict of interest – and at worst, he’s out to cheat you.

Don’t take that chance when shopping for diamond jewelry. Go out and find a reputable appraiser on your own. Because the diamond market is concentrated and under the control of a relatively few entities, you’ll have to do some homework in order to locate an independent appraiser.

What Does “Certified Diamonds” Mean?

When diamonds are “certified,” it means that they have been evaluated at a professional gemology lab. There, the gemologist evaluates the loose gems in terms of:

- Clarity

- Color

- Carat

These are objective, measurable characteristics that determine a diamond’s grade – but not necessarily its monetary value. The certification however is useful for the appraiser in determining the final value. Certified diamonds are graded and ready to be appraised.

The Appraisal

When it comes to individual diamonds that are not yet set in diamond engagement rings or other diamond jewelry, the appraiser uses the grade given in by the gemologist, then factors in characteristics that are not easily quantified, such as cut and fire (sparkle and brilliance). The type of cut can affect the value, especially if the cut is currently popular. “Princess cuts” are fairly popular for use in diamond engagement rings, whereas a square “emerald cut” may be more appropriate for cufflinks and other men’s jewelry.

The Investment

Individual diamonds may or may not be a good investment, but depending on the overall quality, diamond jewelry certainly can be. Whether its diamond engagement rings, brooches, necklaces and bracelets, earrings or even tiaras, it’s good to have your diamond jewelry evaluated and appraised, even if its just for the insurance.

Having a certificate or grading report with your diamond is very important because there are several things it will tell you about your stone. First of all, it lets you know that your diamond has been inspected and certified by one of the world known diamond laboratories. The diamond grading labs that you may find a certificate from are HRD, EGL, GIA, AGS, and IGI. These five labs ensure that all characteristics of your diamond such as the cut, carat, color, and clarity of the diamond are defined on the certificate they provide after inspecting the stone. That way you know what it is you’re buying. Sending a diamond to get certified by one of these institute cost money to the seller and will increase the price the seller asks for the stone but also the confidence of the buyer.

Three of these diamond grading labs, Gemological Institute of America (GIA), European Gemological Laboratory (EGL), and the American Gem Society (AGS) are very well known. Hoge Raad Voor Diamant (HRD) certificates are good, but they are only offered in Belgium. The International Gemological Institute (IGI) grades those diamonds that many say will sell for a lower price because their grading is “softer”.

Are all certifications equal?
The truth is that all certificates are not equal. However, there is one way in which they are the same and that is in the fact that you know you’re getting a genuine stone. Without a certification, you really have no idea whether or not you’re getting something that is real. The certificate also influences how much you pay for your diamond, so that means you need to decide what aspects of a diamond is most important to you. Fortunately, you have a certificate to help you figure those things out.

In the United States, the certifications you are most likely going to see are from AGS and GIA. These are the most trusted sources because they are the two industry leaders. However, these diamonds will be more expensive than those by their competitors, so expect a lower price for IGI and EGL certified diamonds. You don’t have to worry so much about HRD, but if HRD were in the United States, you would expect to pay a pretty penny for diamonds with their certification. A high value diamond simply results in high quality ratings on its certificate. The certificate than gives credibility at the time the diamond is purchased. The certification also makes selling or trading your diamond a lot easier.

So, Which grading report is the best one?
The benefits are clear and the different diamond grading labs help you make an informed buying decision. However, they are not equal. The one that gets a lot of attention is GIA because it is non-profit and they have one location which makes the expert believe the grading is more strict and accurate. This is opposed to EGL, which has 9 locations worldwide. EGL is also not consistent in the quality of their grading. EGL and IGI are good and trusted labs and are more “forgiving” when grading a diamond, so the results are that the prices of EGL and IGI diamonds are lower when compared to GIA and AGS certified diamonds with equal characteristics.

Deciding which certified diamond to buy is really a matter of preference. Like the color, clarity and other characteristics of the diamond, you have to choose the certificate according to your needs. Do some reading and think how much the “quality” of the certificate is important to you. You have a range of options when choosing the color cut or clarity so don’t forget to explore your options when it comes to your certificate. Whatever you do, don’t get a non-certified diamond.

How Diamonds are Certified

Posted by admin in Certified Diamonds at April 18, 2010

If you’re thinking about purchasing loose diamonds or diamond jewelry, it’s a very good idea to make sure that such diamonds are certified diamonds. Such diamonds are accompanied by a document known as a “grading report,” which is not the same thing as an appraisal. While an appraisal can give you an idea of the monetary value of your certified diamonds, it is this grading report that is the basis of this valuation.

How Diamonds are Certified

The grading report describes certified diamonds on the basis of four qualities. These are carat, clarity, color and cut, and therefore are sometimes known as the “Four Cs” of certification. The report is for the benefit of those who create and market diamond jewelry, as well as those who purchase it – either as collectors, investors or both.

Those who prepare such reports are known as gemologists. These are technicians who generally have a degree in geology, then go on for specialized training in the study of precious gems and stones; they are to field of geology what cosmetic surgeons are to the field of medicine.

What the Grading Report Contains

Three of the criteria used to analyze and evaluate diamonds are thoroughly objective, meaning they can be readily measured and quantified. Carat of course is a measure of mass and weight; a carat is equal to 2 decigrams, or roughly 1.5 hundredths of an ounce. Obviously, the more a gem weighs, the greater its value.

With industrial diamonds, the process might stop right there. However, certified diamonds are those used in diamond jewelry, and thus must be pleasing to the eye. The SI Clarity Grade is another criterion by which gemologists evaluate diamonds. The ideal, perfect diamond is rated “FL” for “flawless.” The stone is virtually clear, with no cloudy or “cottony” areas or visible cracks. Stones that are clouded and/or cracked are labeled “I3″ for “imperfect.”

Color is an important factor when it comes to diamonds. These gems are clear or white to be sure, but can also be pink, amber, blue, green or purple. The saturation of these colors can range from the palest tinge to the deepest, darkest shades as well. Some colors are more desirable than others; rich pink and blue diamonds may command much higher prices than dark amber or even clear ones.

Evaluating the cut is a little more problematic. While it is true that a badly cut diamond may be almost worthless, even among quality cuts, some are more desirable than others. The value of cuts when it comes to certified diamonds is determined by market conditions that may change over time.

Objectivity is Vital

It is important to make sure that the grading report that accompanies any certified diamonds have been prepared by a lab that is unaffiliated with the company or individual who is selling them, for reasons that should be obvious.
